  • Bonaly’s Still Got It

    Bonaly’s Still Got It

Here is a performance from Surya Bonaly  from 2012 at an exhibition in Turin Italy.  Showing her signature athleticism and back flip, she does really well with all her jumps and looks great on the ice.  It is good to know that she is still performing and showing all she can do on the ice.  It has been awhile since we have seen her and sure are glad we ran across this video.  Well done and we hope to see [...]

  • Music Of The Night From Robin Cousins

Music Of The Night From Robin Cousins

Here is a piece from 1990 World Professional Championship where Robin Cousins gives a very nice theatrical performance to the song “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera.  Cousins has a certain presence on the ice and his movements are patient and smooth – making for a routine that draws you in and gets you involved in each transition…each portion of the performance.  That skip spiral was pretty cool, too.

  • The Women Win This Battle Of The Sexes

The Women Win This Battle Of The Sexes

I may be a bit prejudiced, but to me it is quite clear that the battle of these Back Flips is clearly won by  Surya Bonaly.  Not only does she time her back flip on the crescendo but she also lands on one foot!  On the ice! Wow!  Sorry Brian Orser, Michael Weiss, and Robin Cousins.  Close, but not close enough.

  • A Moving Tribute To JFK From Paul Wylie

A Moving Tribute To JFK From Paul Wylie

At the end of this piece, choreographer Sandra Bezic says, “One of the greatest pieces of choreography I have ever seen.”   The performance from Paul Wylie included incredible jumps and spins as well as deep feeling from him as he interpreted the music from the movie JFK in this tribute piece. The combination of subject matter, music and that beautiful choreography told a complete story on ice and Wylie was certainly rewarded for it in his scores for this artistic [...]

  • Masters of Ice Skating Footwork Show Off

Masters of Ice Skating Footwork Show Off

What do Kurt Browning, Scott Hamilton and Paul Wylie have in common?  They are all masters of footwork on the ice.  They are all known for some pretty incredible footwork sequences during performances and this clip from a Stars on Ice show has them in rare form as they compete to outdo each other and have some fun showing off their intricate footwork. Edges and balance are so important in the execution of some of these tricks, it is quite [...]

This video is a mashup of three different routines from three different pairs teams.  You can see some of the amazing throws, side by side jumps, death spiral and other moves these teams execute.  They are simply amazing, or as the song says, ‘simply the best’ at what they do.  The teams are Russian pairs Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov, German pairs Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy and Russian pairs Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov.

  • Suzuki Secured 3rd At World Championship

Suzuki Secured 3rd At World Championship

Akiko Suzuki saved some of her required jumping passes for later in her routine and paid the price for it.  She popped out of one of the jumps – was this a costly mistake?  Very possibly.  She did well enough to secure a third place finish, but could it have been a second place finish? We might never know!  She is a wonderful performer and has been through a lot over the last several years; it is so good to [...]

  • Pairs Figure Skating Can Be Dangerous

Pairs Figure Skating Can Be Dangerous

Universal Sports put together their own montage piece that shows that pairs figure skating is a little tricky.  Yes, big lifts and throws can be really dangerous, but even simple moves can prove difficult when you are having to account for another person as well. The ‘Death Spiral’ depends so much on that toe pick and the pairs team here was lucky.  Sometimes when they lose balance like that, their skate can hit the woman’s head or even the woman’s [...]
